Housing starts tumble in September

Housing starts ran at a 1.13 million seasonally adjusted annual rate, down 4.7% for the month, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. The consensus was for a 1.17 million pace. Starts were 6.1% higher compared to a year ago.

Housing permits, which foreshadow future starts activity, also tumbled. They were down 4.5% for the month, and 4.3% lower compared to September 2016.
