U.S. jobless claims fall to 5-week low of 236,000

Initial U.S. jobless claims, a way to measure layoffs, fell by 2,000 to 236,000 in the seven days ended Dec 2.

Economists had forecast claims to total 240,000.
The more stable monthly average of claims slipped by 750 to 241,500, the government said Thursday.

The number of people already collecting unemployment benefits, known as continuing claims, declined by 52,000 to 1.91 million.
